                                           The Story of the Goethals Story

For the person bearing the name Goethals- or related to a Goethals- this book gets you in touch with your roots. You may not be able to trace and document your own connection to a particular member of the historic branches of Ghent and Kortrijk in Belgium, but you may marvel at the remarkable story of the Goethals family to which your DNA may be connected. Today, there are about 6,900 people bearing the name Goethals of which ca 5,000 live in Belgium and more than 300 in the U.S.A. and Canada.

Few families can trace their documented ancestry dating back to the 9th century. The Goethals family- reportedly originated in Italy ca 880, a tale of fact and legend consistently retold throughout the centuries. From the beginning of the 12th century the Goethals flourished in Ghent in Flanders(Belgium).

   A notable series of publications in the 19th century focused on the Goethals history. Subsequently, commentaries, expansions and corrections have been added. These genealogical sources, available only in French, Dutch and Latin, are scattered over the span of more than 200 years.

    This new book not only describes the genealogical literature of the 19th century, but publishes, for the first time in the English language, three classical branches of the Goethals of Ghent, capital of East-Flanders in Belgium. Corrections of erroneous data and incorrect links, resulting from the discovery of new sources, are incorporated in the history.

    In addition, the saga of three “forgotten” Goethals branches are part of the book:  the family of General George Washington Goethals, “builder of the Panama Canal”,  his relative Geeraert Goethals, accepted in the nobility in 1652, and the Goethals of Kortrijk.

    Inserts throughout the text, 77 illustrations and the histories of Flanders and Ghent, provide the reader with a cultural and historical background. A chronological list of 718 Goethals households and 1,150 baptisms (including the godparents), in eight parishes of Ghent and three neighboring churches from 1584 to 1796, will be a rich source for Goethals researchers. The 296 pages book ends with an extensive bibliography  and an index of names and their spouses for each chapter.

“Since his retirement in 2001, the Flemish emigrant Jozef (“Jeff”) Goethals’ free time is dedicated to his great passion: genealogy. This new book is really divided in two parts: seven chapters about the Goethals family originating from Ghent and two appendices of which the second deserves attention. The book was published in the USA and the author found it important to give a sketch of the history of Flanders to 1900 in his introduction. This introductory part ends in an overview of the sources of his research, a short but very useful description of possible source materials for genealogical research.

The author then goes on a search for genealogists who wrote Goethals family histories and their specific sources. Obviously, the author had access to many published sources which allowed him to go back far in time. The book is in any case a richly illustrated genealogy with extensive descriptions of many ancestors. The family has indeed a number of famous descendants. Jeff Goethals gives us in the second appendix a list of no less than 2580 people with the name Goethals appearing in the parish records of Ghent from 1563 to 1796. The book includes also a extensive index of personal names. Dit nieuw boek over de Goethals familie, gepubliceerd in het engels, zal aan iedereen met de Goethals naam- of verwant aan de Goethals- de kans geven om kennis te maken met de Goethals familiegeschiedenis. Zelfs als u nog geen schakel hebt ontdekt met de Goethals voorvaders van Gent of Kortrijk, zal u zich verbazen over de merkwaardige geschiedenis van uw naamgenoten met wie uw DNA wellicht verbonden is... Tegenwoordig zijn er ongeveer 6900 die de Goethalsnaam dragen, waarvan er ca 5000 in Belgié verblijven.

De Goethals familie beweert vanuit Italië afkomstig te zijn in de negende eeuw: een verhaal van feiten en legende die door de eeuwen heen werd herhaald, bevestigd en ontkend. Vanaf het begin van de elfde eeuw floreren de Goethals in Gent.

Dit werk is meer dan een poging om een familiegeschiedenis samen te stellen. Het is, als de titel  suggereert, de “Story of the Goethals Story” - een geschiedenis van de Goethals geschiedenis. Het is ook de eerste keer dat de Goethals geschiedenis in het engels gepresenteerd wordt.

In de negentiende eeuw verscheen een merkwaardige reeks familiegeschiedenissen van de Goethals familie in Gent. Goethals 880-1900 compileert die informatie en onderneemt een kritisch onderzoek van de aanspraken op een on-onderbroken lijn tot aan de Italiaanse stamvaders. Overigens worden, op basis van  meer recente opzoekingen, sommige van de foutieve data gecorrigeerd, niet-gedocumenteerde schakels gekritiseerd en nieuwe data toegevoegd. 

Bovendien worden drie “vergeten” Goethals takken aan die geschiedenis toegevoegd: de voorouders van Generaal George Washington Goethals, hoofdingenieur van het Panama Kanaal, Geeraert Goethals die in 1652 in de adel werd opgenomen, en de Goethals van Kortrijk.

Doorheen de tekst bezorgen vignetten over Vlaamse kulturele, politieke en sociale inhoud, 77 illustraties en beknopte geschiedenissen van Vlaanderen en Gent, een achtergrond voor de lezer. Seder de naar de States uitgeweken Vlaming Jozef (“Jeff”) Goethals in 2001 op rust is, gaat al zijn vrije tijd naar zijn grote passie: de genealogie. Dit nieuw boek van zijn hand bestaat eigenlijk uit twee grote delen: een zevental hoofdstukken over de familie Goethals die uit Gent afkomstig is en anderzijds twee appendices waarvan het tweede vooral de aandacht trekt. The boek verscheen in de USA waardoor de auteur het nuttig vindt in zijn inleiding een schets te geven van de geschiedenis van Vlaanderen tot 1900. Dit inleidend gedeelte wordt trouwens afgesloten met een overzicht van de bronnen van zijn onderzoek, een korte maar heel nuttige beschrijving van mogelijk bronnenmateriaal voor genealogisch onderzoek.

Daarna gaat de auteur op zoek naar de genealogen van een Goethals-stamboom en de specifieke bronnen. Blijkbaar beschikte de auteur ook over vele gepubliceerde bronnen om ver in de tijd terug te kunnen keren. Het is in ieder geval een rijk geillustreerde genealogie met uitgebreide beschrijving van vele nazaten. De familie telt trouwens enkele beroemde telgen in haar rangen. In de tweede appendix geeft Jeff Goethals ons een lijst van niet minder dan 2580 personen met de naam Goethals die voorkomen in de Gentse parochieregisters van 1563 tot 1796. Het boek bevat ook een uitgebreide index op de persoonsnamen. Een uitgebreide bibliografie ontbreekt evenmin naast een overzicht van alle gepubliceerde archiefstukken

Ruiselede 1889- Molines, Illinois 1951

    This Register Report describes 10 generations of the ancestry of Margeret Elodia Goethals, born in Ruiselede in 1889. She emigrated to the United States in 1919 and married Charles Louis Lambert, also a Belgian immigrant. They settled in Molines, Illinois. Margaret’s ancestors were already present in Aarsele in the late 1500s and spread to Ruiselede, Tielt and Kanegem.

    The 82 page report also provides a chronological list of all the Goethals households in Aarsele and Ruiselede from ca 1600 to 1800. It includes illustrations, charts, sources and bibliography.
